Doug McCann's Teaching Philosophy

Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is based on my experiences in classrooms that I’ve been in for service learning. Being a student and having a parent teach also contribute to these experiences. I will use this to my advantage in my teaching philosophy, class room management, and teaching goals to better myself as a teacher so that my students will maximize their knowledge in history everyday. I view the student as a natural learner who uses 21st century skills as well as collaboration to come to a goal on any challenge. I view the role of the teacher as one similar to a pilot. I will take the students with me as we take a trip through new content in a specific time period. I will continue to adapt to new and exciting strategies I pick up along the way as a lifelong learner. I will use my past, present, and future experiences to continue to build my teaching pedagogy, and will always remember that each class is teaching me just as much as I plan to teach them.
Classroom Management
I believe that teaching is one of the greatest gifts you can ever learn. This being said, I want to use and share this gift in my classroom.I believe that teaching begins at the door and welcoming students to my classroom everyday will be a ritual so they know right when the walk in the classroom they are cared about, shown respect, and prepared, but pushed. I am thankful for all my past educators encouraging me and asking me to push through adversity, which is what I will instill in my students as well.
Teaching Goals
- I expect students to have high expectations of themselves, and to set high goals which challenge them.
- I expect students to have high expectations of me.
- I expect students to be respectful of themselves, of others, of property, and of me or any other person who is in the classroom.
- I expect students to give their all on each and every assignment and to ask questions or come to me with concerns so I can help.
- I expect myself to build relationships with students so I can help them accomplish learning at a personal level.
